On Sunday last our parish community was delighted to welcome relatives of Fr. Jack O’Brien, Fr. Tommie Cusack and Fr. Francis Canavan, members of the Society of Saint Columban, Dalgan Park, who were martyred for their faith, beliefs, and ideals in Korea in 1950 at a special Mass of Remembrance Their stories are one of total courage and self denial and have much to teach us in our contemporary society. They are currently on their road to canonisation by the Pope. Fr. Jack O’Brien was a nephew of the late Tommy Hegarty of Hall Street. The Hegarty and Yorke families, relatives of Fr. O’Brien joined with other relatives of Fr. Cusack and Fr. Canavan, who had travelled from Mayo, Roscommon, Clare and Scotland for the occasion in Kingscourt.
