The Trocaire appeal in the parishes of the Diocese of Meath during Lent 2014 raised a total of € 346,423.00.
The theme of the Lenten appeal was access to water. Trocaire highlights that 783 million people do not have access to clean, safe water.
Drier climates across sub-Saharan Africa are leaving communities struggling without enough water for drinking, sanitation and growing food.
Enestina (9) was the girl on this year’s Trócaire box. She comes from a small community in rural Malawi that has relied on a polluted river for drinking and washing for many years. The community depends on the unpredictable rains to water their crops, meaning they never know what food they can produce. Trócaire is working to change this. For children like Enestina, access to water means better health, more nutritious food and more time in school.
The following are some excerpts from the letter of Eamonn Meehan, Director of Trocaire, to Bishop Michael Smith, acknowledging receipt of the proceeds of the Lenten appeal in the Diocese of Meath:
“At the very heart of Trocaire’s work is a belief in helping people to help themselves, so that they can overcome poverty and determine a better future of themselves. We are deeply grateful for the continued support and commitment we receive from the clergy and the people of the Diocese of Meath to help families and communities transform their lives.
“Trocaire’s programmes last year reached over 3.4 million people directly and had an indirect impact on over 30 million people worldwide. This would not be possible without the generous support we receive from the priests and parishioners in your diocese.”
While the contribution in some parishes was the same or lower in a number of parishes, compared with figures for 2013, it is positive to note that there was an increase in the donations from 24 out of the 69 parishes.
